The herb is a mingling of sweet and spicy woven with anise and mint. But there's always something else, deeper in the flavor profile, that lends this basil its magic. It's not surprising, then, that over the centuries basil has been associated with legends and deities. We are grateful that it is still with us today, like ancient Thai scrolls come to life, imparting its mythical flavor to our favorite stir fries and curries.

Chives - A patch of chives delights all of the senses. The sight, smell, touch, and taste of chives even the sound of the hollow stems popping open when snapped in half, all are full of intense energy. Soft spines return vividly early in spring. Soon after, delicate buds form, their pale hoods veiling the soon-to-be orbs of dense purple spikes that burst open like supernovas. Edible, ornamental, and perennial, these hardy culinary clusters are an easy and essential part of every kitchen garden.

Mint - Possessing one of the most potent and recognized aromas in the plant kingdom, mint is a truly magical plant. When grown from seed, it delivers a magical surprise: each plant is slightly different in appearance and flavor profile. In an age like ours when we can control our conditions more than any humans in history, inviting uncertainty into our gardens gives us a chance to let go and find gratitude for whatever manifests, especially when we trust that whatever manifests is going to be delicious.

Important note: Growing plants from seeds can seem intimidating, but it is not that difficult. Tulsi, considered a sacred plant in the Hindu religion, has been cultivated for at least 3,000 years. Known as the Incomparable One, Queen of the Herbs, and Elixir of Life, the scent, as well as preparations of the herb, have been used to heal for centuries. Today's plant scientists classify Sacred Basil as an adaptogen, a substance that helps us adapt mentally and physically to stressful circumstances. One whiff of its exquisite aroma and you'll understand why! This particular variety, O. africanum, hails from East Africa and is known for it's tutti-frutti scent, fast growth, and frost tolerance, and is the most commonly found variety in the U.S., as it is very well-adapted to the North American climate. This variety makes a delicious tea–and is much beloved by the bees.

Echinacea - Echinos, the Greek word from which Echinacea is derived, means "hedgehog" or "sea urchin." While this accurately captures the bristly head of this coneflower, it does little to place the plant in space and time. Echinacea is actually native to eastern America, home to neither aforementioned creature. A widely known immune booster, it is most often grown as an ornamental. It also attracts and feeds important native pollinators, making Echinacea a healer both for us and for the environment.

Catnip - A calm kitty happened upon a wild patch of an alluring herb. Into her nose flooded the intoxicating chemical nepetalactone, the source of catnip's power. It bound to her olfactory receptors, causing her to become intoxicated. The natural high opened her eyes to a magical realm she had never known, showing her a new kingdom over which to reign. From that day forth, she became the kitty princess the ruler of her own imaginative (and, yes, possibly imaginary) world. Celebrate your kitty's reign with the gift of a catnip patch. Catnip is a great treat to grow for cats, but it is also a wonderful perennial herb for the garden. Its fragrant flowers attract many beneficial pollinators. Plus, catnip is a medicinal herb for humans, too. It's used as a very mild sleep aid in the form of catnip tea.

Important note: Growing plants from seeds can seem intimidating, but it is not that difficult. Everlasting flowers are one such foothold: they are something beautiful that lasts. The blooms delight us in the garden from mid-summer on, and when harvested and dried they keep their bright, cheerful tones throughout the colder months. Alas, after a year or two of exposure to ambient light, the blooms begin a slow process of fading: everlasting in name only, they, too, must eventually cede to impermanence.

German Chamomile - Our era is twitchy: our senses are hammered by ringtones, vibrations, alarms, and sirens. The resulting society-wide anxiety is the affliction of our time. Need relief? Try some little apples. This is the name given by the ancient Greeks to the spherical, golden, highly aromatic centers of chamomile blossoms. The ancients realized these morsels had healing properties and used them to treat fever, improve mood, and induce relaxation, in addition to using them in beer-making. In your own garden, you can experience these qualities simply by walking through a patch of chamomile in full bloom: its aroma is both heady and soothing, its profusion of tiny blooms a visual delight.

Echinacea - Echinos, the Greek word from which Echinacea is derived, means "hedgehog" or "sea urchin." While this accurately captures the bristly head of this coneflower, it does little to place the plant in space and time.
